Seattle School District and Cascadia Elementary School believe that "Public education systems and educators have an important role to play in disrupting legacies of racism. Declaring “Black Lives Matter at School” affirms our commitment to all of our students and elevates Black students’ stories, strengths, and struggles - publicly demonstrating our intentional work to create a more just and loving society."
For the third year in a row, we will be discussing the importance of this movement in the library at an age appropriate level. Students in grade levels 1-3 will participate in a read aloud and discuss the importance of self-expression. Student will reflect on what makes each person special and how we can celebrate differences among ourselves. Students in grades 4-5 will examine literature through a race lens. We will look at statistics of books published in 2017 and what races are represented. We will discuss bias and misrepresentation and the reasons for this.
